San Juan's #1 exports are their high school graduates. The scarcity of local jobs takes them all over the world, where they share their work ethic, skills and knowledge. This blog seeks to share those surprising, serendipity encounters, when you meet someone from San Juan in unexpected places, or they know someone from there.
Blanding Encounters in the Yucatan
By Janet Wilcox
It was 2013, and our second trip to Mexico. Steve and I were near the end of a week long vacation in the Yucatan, a perfect place to be in January. We were walking the streets in Playa del Carmen, looking for some good Mexican vanilla to bring home.
Right in the intersection of two busy streets, we ran into Liz Mueller Wellenman, and her husband and three daughters. Even though Liz no longer lives in Blanding, she was raised here and was a fun member of a 4-H sewing club I taught circa 1988. She graduated from SJHS and was in my English class as a Junior. I loved the research project she did about her father, Phil Mueller (radio manager/ announcer extraordinaire) and the KUTA radio station. It was such a surprise running into someone we knew and meeting her wonderful husband and cute kids.
