Thread #3
1--My mother lives in West Jordan and since we have moved to Blanding, she
has found several Blanding Connections within her ward. Her former Bishop was
Bishop Ike (or Fred) May. They are twins, and grew up in Blanding. Marta Redd
Brown, Patsy Redd Shumway's sister, grew up in Blanding, moved into to my
mom's ward a couple of years ago and they became visiting teaching partners.
Her current Bishop, Bishop Pugh, is from Kanab and distantly related to all of
the Pugh's in town. People know about Blanding. Additionally, when I first
married Mike, I ran into a childhood friend, Shirley McDonald Dawson. When I
told her Mike's family was from Blanding, she said, "Oh, my brother Chad
McDonald lives there now. Even though we've lived here almost 8 years, I still
haven't seen Chad. The last time I saw him he was a toddler!

2-- When Mike and I first married, he was in priesthood meeting in our ward in
Salt Lake. One of the brethren of his quorum, Russ Laken, mentioned that he
had flown the hump during WWII. Afterwards, Mike went up and asked him if he
knew Art Rodgers, from Blanding, Utah. Mike explained that Art was his mother's
cousin and had also flown the hump. Russ immediately recognized the name and
told Mike that he had been looking for Art since the war. Russ knew Art was from
a small down in Utah, but had thought he was from the Richfield area. He had
looked and looked for him, to no avail. They had been good friends. Mike told him
that Art never made it home from the war, but had died flying the hump. After that
Russ and Mike became good friends because of the common connection.

3--When Mike and I went on our cruise to the South Seas in 2015, we attended
the temple in Sydney Australia. I went into the dressing room and it was evident I
wasn't a local. The sister asked me where I was from and I said, "Utah". She
wanted me to be specific. I told her Blanding, Utah. She said, "I was part of the
Lamanite Generation and we went to Blanding for a Pow Wow. Then, a second
sister came in. She too asked where I was from, and I told her. She said, "Oh, I've
been to Blanding. We are originally from Cardston, Canada." She too had some
type of Blanding connection. It is a SMALL world!

One of the Guymon's sons was in the bishopric in a ward I served in on my mission in Everett, WA about 2006. It was. Laura Allen's brother, Mark. Donna Arthur added: I met him at church when we went back to Everett, for you to speak at a funeral.

Carol Richmond In the fall of 2016 we were at The Hiding Place in Haarlem, Netherlands. After
sitting in the first room and listening to the story of the Ten Boom family, a woman
came up to me and said she had met me in Blanding at Sherrie Stanley’s
when she visiting there.

One shared by Rob Wilcox: He had just left for basic training with the Nat'l Guard at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and didn't get to attend church for the first two week. The Sunday he went, who should be there but a Blanding missionary, Lloyd Watkins. This was in 1989.
A few years later while serving as a missionary in Korea, he also had an opportunity to see Mike Bowring who was serving in a different Korean mission. He also once visited an Korean family who had a picture of his cousin, who had served in that same area a few years before. Even in Korea Blanding connections are possible.

A little off topic, but at one time, there were 6 of us from the same
town in so. CA who had moved to Blanding:, Kay Jolley Bradford, Hollie and
John Sanford, Kent and Paula Lewis, and another who lived here a short time.
Seems like a lot of people, to me.

--We went to church in Spanish Fork a few years ago, and our friends' Bishop
was one of Preston Nielson's sons. [Jens Nielson] Another time, we were visiting
our daughter and family, in Nampa, ID, and were asked to introduce ourselves
to the class. One of the couples there was related to someone in Blanding. I will
try to get names.

When I'm visiting my sister, who lives in South Jordan, it seems
like I always see people from Blanding when we are shopping or eating out. We
were at Temple Square to see the lights and the MoTab Christmas Concert in
2016 and walked past Punk and Jane Holliday. They said "Hi" and my sister
said, "So, do you know them?" She is always amazed and has commented, "You
see more people you know than I see people I know, and I live here!" 😊 Later
the same evening, we ran into

Seems like Blanding would be a huge city,
since so many folks all around the world have a connection to it! Pretty amazing!!!

My husband will laugh ;) when I tell him that you are compiling these types of
stories.... he has come to know if anyone finds out I'm from Blanding, he just
waits for them to say, they know someone from there... or have some connection. ;)

We have lived in Bakersfield, CA for 15 years. Here are just a few of the most
recent connections I've had. A couple years ago, I was talking with a well-known
older member of our stake (for the 1st time). His name is Kimball Hawkins.
I found out his grandparents were from Blanding and he is my dad’s cousin,
(through 2 lines). His daughter also lives here, so she is my 2nd cousin. About
that same time I also found out I have another 2nd cousin who also lives in our
same stake, but from my mom’s side.)

grew up in Monticello, He kept me in the loop of any incoming missionaries with
San Juan ties. Kline and Diane Carrol’s granddaughter served here, also
Michelle Jensen Martineau (she had been a coach and PE teacher at SJH) her
daughter served here.... can't remember the rest. There is also an older widow, in
our stake who's husband was a business partner with Ray Palmer when they
lived in Huntington Beach, CA. (I will find out her name)

here's one that involves you Janet Keeler Wilcox, one of our previous Home
teachers is from Idaho and he remembers you, Keith Adams. :)

the in-laws to Mandy Bradford.

Just met Robin Lyman's, grandson of Albert R. He grew up in Monticello. We are
in Sacramento. He was washing windows and had "Lyman" on his bucket!
I wasn't going to send anymore stories but two more yesterday and one today.
Went to the church yesterday for a charity workshop. I heard someone say their
name was Marilyn so talked to her. She had a roommate from Blanding but
couldn't remember her name. The woman next to her was a roommate of Jewell
Mikesell. Went riding in the desert today. Met a friend of Dale Lyman's. By the
way, we are in Quartzsite, AZ

Shortly after I was married, my husband and I were in Rio Vista California visiting
his parents/family. We were hanging out in the front room when there was a
knock at the door. We answered and a woman stood there who had served her
mission in Rio Vista many years earlier. (She was Sister Teichert). I introduced
myself and as conversations go when you first meet someone, she asked where I
was from. I told her Blanding, Utah. She said, “My husband is from Blanding!”
Turns out she was married to one of Jay and LaRue McDaniels sons (I think
Kurt?). Though I never knew Kurt, I grew up in the same ward as the McDaniels.
